At BURKELY, we work with passion, precision, and craftsmanship every day to create perfect bags, while also taking our responsibility seriously.

At BURKELY, we strive to minimize our footprint, prioritize long-term relationships, and choose quality over quantity. We achieve this by using packaging made from recycled materials, partnering with factories that are BSCI certified, and aiming to have 25% of our collection produced with leather sourced from the Leather Working Group (LWG) by 2024.

Genuine leather

At BURKELY, we strive to minimize our environmental impact, prioritize long-term relationships, and choose quality over quantity. We achieve this by using packaging made from recycled materials, working with BSCI certified factories, and aiming to have 25% of our collection produced with leather sourced from the Leather Working Group (LWG) by 2024.

We often receive the question about why we don’t work with Vegan Leather. Vegan leather is often made from PU (polyurethane), a material with a shorter lifespan that is difficult to biodegrade or recycle, contributing to plastic pollution. In our opinion, sustainable production of real leather is a better choice for the environment than Vegan Leather.

Leather Working Group

At BURKELY, we are committed to improving the leather supply chain by producing quality products in a fair and safe manner with minimal impact on the environment. To achieve this, we prefer to collaborate with tanneries that are affiliated with the Leather Working Group (LWG). Our goal is to have 25% of our collection produced with leather sourced from LWG-certified suppliers by 2024.

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an international non-profit organization responsible for the world’s largest sustainability program for leather. LWG aims to improve the environmental impact of the leather industry by evaluating and certifying leather manufacturers. They also actively work towards reducing their emissions.

Working conditions

All BURKELY bags have been produced in India since 1993, where we maintain close relationships. In addition to striving for sustainable materials, we also ensure good working conditions. This includes ensuring safety, fair wages, and the absence of forced labor and child labor. We personally visit the factories in India multiple times a year, and we also work with BSCI-certified factories.

BSCI is an initiative led by European companies that aims to improve and ensure better working conditions. BSCI stands for Business Social Compliance Initiative.

You can trust that all BURKELY items are made under fair conditions. We’ve got your bag!

Collections

At present, a portion of our collection is produced using leather sourced from the LWG. By purchasing these products, you contribute to responsible and environmentally-friendly leather production. You can identify these items on our webshop by the presence of the LWG logo in the image.

Packaging

At BURKELY, we are committed to using recycled materials for all our packaging. This includes the tags attached to the bags and the plastic polybags that ensure your new bag is delivered to your home without any damage. Do you also separate the materials when you dispose of them? By doing so, we can contribute together to creating a better world.
